The last people in the world
By ordering all towns and cities in the world in alphabetical order Aachen (Aachen in Germany) and Aalborg (Denmark) would certainly at the top. Both were ahead by little the town of Aa, Estonia, and this in turn is overcome by Å (pronounced "O"), a village in the Lofoten Islands, Norway. But the last people in the world alphabetically?
could be Zweirbrücken, Germany, Zwolle, Holland, or more likely Żyrardów, Poland. But not one of them. The honor belongs to a village called quite unlikely: Zzyzx, California, whose origins are almost as curious as its name.
The origin of such a place name is fully conscious, could not be otherwise. The area where the town was primarily a U.S. Army post in the late nineteenth century and later became a rest stop for travelers heading to the coast of California across the Mojave Desert.
In 1905 a railroad reached the site dedicated to supplying mining borax mines in southern Nevada, and Soda Springs was losing its raison d'être to be completely abandoned. Depletion of mines, in fact, lead also the abandonment of the railway line that was passing over the 1930. Until 1944 the site never again be inhabited.
Shortly before the end of World War II, however, place back to life thanks to an evangelical radio preacher, a man named Curtis Springer. The preacher got permits for mining activities at the site, the ownership remained in the hands of the federal government, and proceeded to build a health resort with religious overtones.
When choosing a name, did not hesitate, since its spa was the final cure, the name had to be consistent. It was decided by Zzyzx, that, indeed, was and remains the last name in English (and probably in any language that uses the Latin alphabet).
For thirty years, the radiopredicador kept the place, packing fixes for any illness, from cancer to hemorrhoids, which consisted of little more than water with a plant extract. In 1974 the federal government realized that they had requested leave was for mining, and wholesale swindling not been regarded as such, so I proceeded to throw a kick.
But the name of the resort and the road leading to it remained. Today, at Zzyzx (which, incidentally, is pronounced something like zi-six) there is only a small college in place, dedicated to studies the Mojave Desert. The Luig, that does not stop being a drain in the middle of the desert, has some relevance because of its name and has given its original place name some artists.
Zeromancer Norwegians, whose existence is probably unknown until thirty seconds, they put Zzyzx one of their albums, and there is a song with the same name. But it is in the cinema where Zzyzx has reached its highest artistic dimension. Two films are set in place (above you see the signs).
curious story of the last people on earth, and also the place to name the world's rarest or most, right? I hope you enjoyed it information ... thank you very much for your visit ... and for your solidarity with my page, to see if I like to go some day to see live as Zzyzx strange place lol.
